Glomerulonephritis (GN) is inflammation of the glomeruli — the tiny filters of the kidney. It causes blood and/or protein in the urine, high BP and, in some cases, falling kidney function. It can be primary (starting in the kidney) or secondary to diseases like lupus, vasculitis, infections or hepatitis.
IgA nephropathy is the most common primary GN worldwide. It often shows as red or cola-coloured urine a day or two after a sore throat or cold, or as microscopic blood found on a routine test.
