What is Juvenile Arthritis (Children)?

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is arthritis that starts before 16 years of age and lasts more than 6 weeks. It is the most common type of arthritis in children. "Idiopathic" means the exact cause is not known; it is an autoimmune condition.

Children may not complain of pain. Parents often notice limping in the morning, a swollen knee or ankle, or a child who stops playing. Some types also cause a silent inflammation of the eye (uveitis) that can harm vision if not checked.

Common symptoms

• A swollen knee, ankle or other joint for more than 6 weeks
• Limping or stiffness in the morning that gets better later
• Child avoiding play, writing or walking
• Daily high fever with a pink rash (systemic JIA)
• Red eyes or blurred vision
• Uneven leg length or slow growth

• Complete blood count, ESR and CRP
• ANA (helps decide eye-check frequency)
• RF and HLA-B27 in some types
• Joint ultrasound (in clinic)
• Regular eye check by an ophthalmologist (slit-lamp)
