Who treats Myositis in Visakhapatnam?

At MRKC, Visakhapatnam, myositis is diagnosed and treated by rheumatologist Dr. Nagamounika Kothapalli, with tests for muscle enzymes, antibodies and lung involvement.

What is Myositis?

Myositis means inflammation of the muscles. In autoimmune myositis — such as dermatomyositis and polymyositis — the immune system attacks muscle, causing weakness, mostly of the shoulders, hips and thighs.

Dermatomyositis also causes a rash on the eyelids, knuckles, chest or back. Some patients have lung involvement. In adults, dermatomyositis is sometimes linked with an underlying cancer, so screening is part of the evaluation.

Common symptoms

  • Difficulty getting up from a chair, squatting or climbing stairs
  • Difficulty lifting arms to comb hair
  • Purple rash on the eyelids or red patches over the knuckles
  • Muscle aches and tiredness
  • Difficulty swallowing or a change in voice
  • Breathlessness or dry cough
