Who treats Psoriatic Arthritis in Visakhapatnam?

At MRKC, Visakhapatnam, psoriatic arthritis is treated by rheumatologist Dr. Nagamounika Kothapalli. Up to 3 in 10 people with psoriasis develop joint problems, and many medicines used for the joints also help the skin.

What is Psoriatic Arthritis?

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis that occurs in people with psoriasis (or a family history of it). It can affect the joints, the places where tendons attach to bone (such as the heel), the spine and the nails.

Joint symptoms usually start years after the skin rash, but sometimes they come first. Like rheumatoid arthritis, untreated psoriatic arthritis can damage joints, so early treatment matters.

Common symptoms

  • Joint pain and swelling, often uneven (one side more than the other)
  • A whole finger or toe swollen like a sausage (dactylitis)
  • Heel pain or pain at the back of the ankle
  • Pitting, ridges or lifting of the nails
  • Back or buttock pain with morning stiffness
  • Patches of psoriasis on the scalp, elbows, knees or navel

⚠️ See a doctor soon if you notice

Do not wait for your next appointment. For an emergency, go to the nearest hospital.

Tests that help

Not every patient needs every test. The doctor chooses tests based on your symptoms and old reports.

  • ESR and CRP
  • Rheumatoid factor and anti-CCP (usually negative — helps tell it apart from RA)
  • HLA-B27 if there is back pain
  • Ultrasound of joints and tendons (in clinic)
  • X-rays of hands, feet or spine
  • Liver function, sugar and lipids before treatment

How we care for Psoriatic Arthritis at MRKC

1

Assess skin and joints

Count the joints, tendons, nails and skin areas involved.

2

Start treatment

Methotrexate, sulfasalazine or leflunomide; local steroid injections for single joints or tendons.

3

Step up if needed

Biologics (TNF, IL-17 or IL-23 blockers) or other targeted medicines when standard medicines are not enough — these often clear the skin too.

4

Care for the whole person

Weight, sugar, BP and cholesterol are checked, as psoriasis raises heart risk.

Can I have psoriatic arthritis without psoriasis?
Yes, sometimes joint symptoms come first, especially if a close family member has psoriasis. Hidden psoriasis on the scalp, navel or between the buttocks is often found on examination.
Do I need a dermatologist and a rheumatologist?
For mild skin and joint disease, the rheumatologist can manage both. Severe skin disease may need a dermatologist as well, and we coordinate the plan.
